How to prepare Driving License
To obtain a driving license in India, follow these steps:
Eligibility Check to prepare Driving License
- Age Requirement:
- Motorcycle without gear (below 50cc): Minimum 16 years.
- Motorcycle with gear and Light Motor Vehicle (LMV): Minimum 18 years.
- Commercial Vehicle: Minimum 20 years.
- Learning License: Must first obtain a Learner’s License (LLR).
Apply for a Learner’s License (LLR) before LMV License
- Documents Required:
- Proof of Age (e.g., birth certificate, Aadhaar card, school certificate).
- Proof of Address (e.g., utility bill, Aadhaar card, rental agreement).
- Passport-sized photographs.
- Application Process:
- Online: Visit the Parivahan website and select the “Driving License Related Services” option.
- Offline: Visit the nearest Regional Transport Office (RTO).
- Fee Payment: Pay the required fee online or at the RTO.
- Test: Appear for a written or online test on traffic rules and regulations. Study the Indian road signs, signals, and traffic rules beforehand.
- Issuance: After passing the test, you’ll receive a Learner’s License, which is valid for six months.
Practice Driving before Drive Test for License
- Practice Period: Use the learner’s license to practice driving on the road.
- Supervision: Practice under the supervision of a licensed driver or enroll in a recognized driving school for formal training.
Apply for a Permanent Driving License
- Eligibility: After 30 days and within 6 months of receiving the Learner’s License, you can apply for a permanent driving license.
- Documents Required for a Permanent Driving License:
- Learner’s License.
- Application Form 4 (can be downloaded online or obtained at the RTO).
- Proof of Age, Address, and Passport-sized photographs.
- Application Process for a Permanent Driving License:
- Online: Apply through the Parivahan website.
- Offline: Submit the application and documents at the local RTO.
- Driving Test for a Permanent Driving License:
- Appointment: Book an appointment for a driving test.
- Test: You will be tested on your ability to control the vehicle, follow traffic rules, and recognize road signs. Ensure your vehicle is in good condition.
- Fee Payment: Pay the required fee for the driving test and license issuance.
Driving License Issuance
- Result: If you pass the driving test, the RTO will process your application, and the driving license will be issued.
- Delivery: The driving license will be sent to your registered address or you may collect it from the RTO.
- Digital License: You can also access a digital copy of your license via the DigiLocker or mParivahan apps.
License Renewal and Maintenance
- Validity: A private driving license is typically valid for 20 years or until the holder turns 50, whichever comes first.
- Renewal: Apply for renewal before it expires.
- Adhere to Traffic Rules: Maintain a good driving record by following all traffic laws and regulations.
